New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s volleyball team earned its first conference win of the season on Saturday winning a hard fought five set match over Medgar Evers College in come from behind fashion at the CUNYAC multi-match on Saturday. The win improves John Jay to 4-5 (1-1 CUNYAC) on the season.
The Bloodhounds went back and forth with the Cougars in the opening set before falling by three in the end. The second match saw more of the same, before the Bloodhounds rallied late to tie the match.
John Jay appeared to take control by the third set having jumped out to a 14-5 lead. But Medgar Evers College chipped away at the lead and took the lead late in the match before claiming victory to go up 2-1.
The Bloodhounds showed resilience in a must win game four. Trailing at several portions of the back-and-forth match, John Jay mounted a late rally to prevail and force a fifth and decisive game.
In the fifth game the Bloodhounds took command from the outset and cruised to victory, winning 15-7.
Sara Altamirano (Bronx, NY / John F. Kennedy) crushed 17 kills in the win, had 16 digs, and four service aces. Jennifer Gozalez (Bronx, NY / Jane Addams Vocational) had 10 kills in the victory, plus 14 digs, and four solo blocks.
Katherine Higuera-McCoy (Jamaica, NY / St. Francis Prep) chipped in with seven kills plus 17 digs. Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY / Brentwood) added a team-high 18 digs and had seven kills plus a service ace.
The Bloodhounds will return to action on Tue. Sept. 18 at Hunter College at 6 p.m.
