New York, N.Y. – The John Jay women’s volleyball team lost its home opener on Thursday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Montclair State, 3-0, as the Bloodhounds now stand at 0-3 on the season. John Jay lost by scores of 30-11, 30-21, and 30-25.
The visiting Red Hawks jumped out of the box early scoring the first nine points of the first game and led the entire match. In the second game the two teams sparred the first several points, and the two were locked into a 10-10 tie early on.
But Montclair State rallied off nine straight points to take a 19-10 lead and the Red Hawks never trailed again. The Bloodhounds got the lead to within five (21-16) but no closer as the Red Hawks scored nine of the final 14 points of the contest to go up 2-0 in the match.
John Jay took a commanding lead in the third set as the Bloodhounds jumped out to an 11-2 lead, and led by as much as 10 (14-4). But Montclair stuck around and stayed within striking range and chipped into the lead late.
The Bloodhounds still had an eight point lead at 24-16, but Montclair State mounted a late rally outscoring the Bloodhounds 14-1 en route to victory.
Jennifer Gonzalez (Bronx, NY/Jane Addams Vocational) knocked a team-high seven kills in the match to go along with five service aces, while Sara Altamirano (Bronx, NY/John F. Kennedy) had five kills, five digs, and three solo blocks.
Anjanette Perez (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) chipped in with 14 assists and six digs.
John Jay returns to action on Saturday Sept. 8 for a tri-match at SUNY Purchase. John Jay will face the College of St. Elizabeth’s at 3 p.m. and the host school at 5 p.m.
