New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s basketball team lost at home as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Medgar Evers College, 59-49, at the Doghouse on Friday evening. The Bloodhounds now stand at 3-12 (1-5 CUNYAC) while Medgar Evers is now 4-9 (2-4 CUNYAC).
After a scoreless contest the first several minutes of the game, Medgar Evers got on the board and eventually led from start to finish.
Medgar Evers scored the game’s first field goal with 3:02 gone by and scored the first four points of the game.
The visiting Cougars eventually opened the game on an 11-3 run to grab an eight point advantage at the 11:17 mark of the first half on a lay-up by Melika Joseph (Brooklyn, NY / Erasmus Hall).
The Cougars, who went six deep and had five players play thirty plus minutes, led by as much as 10 in the first half and they took the lead by that margin (19-9) at the 8:01 mark on a three point field goal by Christine Pinnock (Brooklyn, NY / George Wingate).
But John Jay used a 6-0 run to get back to within four points of the lead and trailed 19-15 after a lay-up by
Tina Ogunleye (Central Islip, NY / Central Islip) with 6:22 to play.
John Jay trailed again by four on the next possession when Parker Griffin (New York, NY / Bishop Kearney), who had 15 points and a team-high 13 rebounds, put home a lay-up at the 5:35 maker to make the score 21-17.
But the Bloodhounds never got closer in the first half and Medgar Evers led 29-24 at halftime.
John Jay cut the deficit to as little as two points in the second half. After Medgar Evers went back up by seven to start the second half, the Bloodhounds used a 5-0 run to move to within two. A three pointer off the glass by
Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY / St. Barnabas) cut the Medgar Evers lead to four and a lay-up by
Zadoora Carson (New York, NY / Urban Peace Academy) got the Bloodhounds to within two.
But the Cougars used a 5-0 run of their own and reclaimed a seven point lead.
John Jay would never get closer as Medgar Evers pulled away and went up by as much as 11 and they took a 56-45 lead at the 3:52 mark to put the game out of reach.
The Bloodhounds, who were without senior guard
Ganimete Ukperaj, got a team-high 16 points from
Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY / North Babylon) who fired up 30 shots in the affair.
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Jan. 14 for a home contest against Vassar College at 6 p.m.
