Brooklyn, N.Y.— The John Jay men’s basketball team rolled to victory on Wednesday as they defeated the New York City College of Technology (NYCCT), 76-64, to improve to 8-9 (4-3 CUNYAC) on the season, giving John Jay its largest win total since the 2003-04 season. The deep Bloodhounds outscored the Yellow Jackets 57-0 in points off the bench en route to victory.
Miguel Garcia (New York, NY / St. Raymond’s) led the Bloodhounds with 25 points on 9-for-18 shooting off the bench, while Alex Valerio (Flushing, NY / Francis Lewis) added 11 off the bench.
The Bloodhounds were in control from the outset and were never threatened in the contest.
John Jay went back and forth with the host Yellow Jackets through the early stages of the game. With NYCCT leading by one (21-20), the Bloodhounds used a 12-3 run in the closing minutes of the first half to pull away and grab a 32-24 lead, it’s biggest lead of the first half. John Jay went into halftime up 32-26.
A fast break lay-up by Gary Brady (Bronx, NY / Martin Luther King) capped off the Bloodhound run at the end of the first half as the Bloodhounds took control of the game. Brady was 3-for-3 from the floor on the evening and had six points and three rebounds.
The Bloodhounds never gave up the lead in the second half en route to their third straight win and fifth in their last six games.
The Yellow Jackets got the lead down to two in the opening minutes of the second half. But with John Jay up 32-30, the Bloodhounds went on an 8-0 run to grab a 40-30 lead at the 13:31 mark on a lay-up by Robert Pierce (Far Rockaway, NY / Benjamin Cardozo).
John Jay never led by less than five points the rest of the way. Both teams shot 41 percent from the floor, but the Bloodhounds held a 52-29 advantage in rebounds. John Jay got a game-high 14 boards from Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY / Hicksville) who added six points to go along.
Hakeem Kased (Brooklyn, NY / Franklin D. Roosevelt) added seven rebounds as twelve of the thirteen Bloodhounds who saw action grabbed at least one rebounds in the contest.
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Jan. 18 at York College at 8 p.m.
