Queens, N.Y.— The John Jay men’s basketball team lost on the road as the Bloodhounds were defeated by York College, 76-59, on Friday evening. The Bloodhounds now stand at 8-10 (4-4 CUNYAC).
The visiting Bloodhounds took the initial control. They opened the game outscoring the Cardinals 11-5 with just under five minutes gone by. Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY / Alfred E. Smith), who scored 12 points in the contest, netted a three point field goal to put the Bloodhounds up by six.
But it would be the biggest lead the Bloodhounds would have all night and the lead quickly evaporated.
York College used an 12-0 run to take a 17-11 lead, and the Cardinals never trailed again.
Still leading 22-17, York went on another run, a 7-0 spurt, to go up by 12 (29-17) with just over three minutes to play.
York eventually grabbed a 13 point lead just before halftime and were lead 33-20 after the first twenty minutes.
John Jay never got to within double figures of the lead in the second half.
York led by as much as 22 over the final twenty minutes. York led 49-27 at the 12:18 marker to cap off an 8-0 run.
Moments later, trailing by 21, the Bloodhounds mounted a mild rally to cut into the York lead. John Jay used an 8-0 spurt to get to within 13 at the 8:13 mark on a lay-up by Alex Valerio (Flushing, NY / Francis Lewis), who had six points and three rebounds.
But York, who had the hot hand shooting 54 percent (28-for-52) in the game, including 58 percent (15-for-26) in the second half, did not let up, and connected on five of their final seven shots over the final five minutes to preserve the win.
John Jay was paced by Gary Brady (Bronx, NY / Martin Luther King) with 13 points off the bench, while Miguel Garcia (New York, NY / St. Raymond’s) added nine. Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY / Hicksville) grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Jan. 21 at Connecticut College at 7 p.m.
