Women's Basketball Handles York, Defeats Cardinals 63-52

Queens, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s basketball team picked up its first double-digit win of the season and their fourth overall as the Bloodhounds defeated York College, 63-52, on Friday evening to improve to 4-14 (2-6 CUNYAC).
 
The Bloodhounds were paced by four players who scored in double figures, three who had double figure rebounding numbers. Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY / North Babylon) led the team with 15 points while grabbing 11 rebounds. Parker Griffin (New York, NY / Bishop Kearney) scored 14 and had 12 boards. Ganimete Ukperaj (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) had 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in the win, while newcomer Maxine Jenkins (Astoria, NY / Bishop Loughlin) scored 10 points off the bench.
 
The visiting Bloodhounds jumped out to a large lead early in the contest. They took a 10-4 lead to start the game and led for much of the first half.
 
John Jay still led by six (15-9) when York put together a big run to take the lead and control of the contest. The Cardinals went on a 15-0 run to grab a 24-15 advantage with 4:04 to play.
 
But the Bloodhounds kept the game close. They never owned a lead in the first half again, but they cut the lead to three (28-25) in the final minute of the first half on a jumper by Tina Ogunleye (Islandia, NY / Central Islip) with fifty-nine seconds remaining.
 
York closed out the half on a mini 4-0 run to go into halftime up 32-25.
 
The Cardinals opened play in the second half scoring on a three point field goal to grab their biggest lead of the night, a 10 point margin.
 
But John Jay immediately went on a 17-2 run to grab a 42-37 lead and cruise to victory from there.
 
John Jay grabbed a 10 point lead with 6:46 to play on a jumper by Jenkins.
 
The Bloodhounds then grabbed its biggest lead of the night at thirteen (63-50) on a three point basket by Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY / Newtown) with 1:36 to play as the Bloodhounds cruised from there.
 
John Jay shot 50 percent (13-for-26) from the floor in the second half and outscored York 38-20 in final twenty minutes.
 
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 23 at Baruch College at 5:30 p.m.
