New London, Conn.— The John Jay men’s basketball team lost a non conference game on the road as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Connecticut College, 71-47, on Monday evening. The Bloodhounds are now 8-11 on the season while Connecticut College is 13-2.
The Bloodhounds were paced by Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY / Alfred E. Smith) with 14 points, while Alex Valerio (Flushing, NY / Francis Lewis) had 13.
The host Camels led from start to finish. They opened the game on a 7-0 run, two minutes into the contest, and established a 10 point advantage (14-4) with just over eight minutes gone by.
But the Bloodhounds established some momentum and got to within three in the late stages of the first half.
Down 19-10, the Bloodhounds rallied off an 8-2 run to cut their deficit to 21-18 capped on a lay-up by Yuri Babayev (Fresh Meadows, NY / John Bowne) with 4:32 to play.
But that would be the last points John Jay would score in the first half as Connecticut College put together a 12-0 run in the final four plus minutes of the first half to establish its biggest lead of the half, a fifteen point advantage just before halftime as the Camels led 33-18 at the break.
The Bloodhounds never got to within fifteen points of the lead in the second half. Connecticut College opened the final twenty minutes of play with a 5-0 spurt to grab a 20 point lead (38-18) early.
John Jay got back to within seventeen points after a three point field goal by Mason, but Connecticut College used another 5-0 spurt to go up by 22 (43-21 after a total 22-3 run including the first half ending).
The Camels led by as much as thirty-three in the second half before the final buzzer. The Bloodhounds did put together a mild run late however. Down 65-32 with 7:01 to play, the Bloodhounds used a 12-1 run to get to within twenty-two points at 66-44 with 2:53 to play. Mason and Valerio each netted six points apiece during the run.
But the Camels traded baskets with the Bloodhounds from there as John Jay loses its final non-conference road contest of the season.
John Jay was held to a season low sixteen rebounds and was out rebounded 31-16 in the game. Valerio led John Jay with three boards.
The Bloodhounds shot 41 percent (17-for-41) in the game, including 50 percent (10-for-20) in the second half. Connecticut College shot 56 percent from the field in the game (26-for-46).
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 23 at Baruch College at 7:30 p.m.
