New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay men’s basketball team set the Doghouse on fire from the outset on Friday night as the Bloodhounds cruised to victory, defeating the City College of New York (CCNY), 75-52 to improve to 9-12 (5-5 CUNYAC) on the season.

John Jay, who shot 55 percent (16-for-29) from the floor in the first half, never trailed in the contest and opened the game on an 18-4 run to take control of the game early. Yuri Babayev (Fresh Meadows, NY / John Bowne) nailed a three pointer at the 14:42 marker to cap the run.

The Bloodhounds shot 6-for-11 from behind the three point arc in the first half and got 11 first half points from Vince Calderon (Woodside, NY / Queens Vocational), who drilled three three point field goals in the first 7:31 of the game. His final three ball of the half came at the 12:29 mark that gave John Jay a 21-8 lead.

The Beavers never came to within six points of the lead. CCNY did go on a 7-0 run which cut a 25-12 deficit into a 25-19 deficit with 7:00 to play

But the Bloodhounds accelerated again, and while owning a seven point lead (33-26) with 2:54 to play, they surged forward with a 9-0 run to close out the first half with a 42-26 lead.

John Jay opened play in the second half on a 7-2 run to take a 49-27 lead, and the Bloodhounds were never threatened in the final twenty minutes.

CCNY got to within 15 points of the lead at the 13:43 point of the half to cap off a 7-0 run, but John Jay answered the call and went back up by twenty plus and maintained the lead from there.

John Jay led by as much as 26 (71-45) in the second half before it was all said and done. Fourteen of the fifteen players who saw action for the Bloodhounds scored at least once, and John Jay got a team-high 18 points from Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY / Alfred E. Smith), who shot 5-for-7 from the floor and 4-for-5 from downtown.

The deep Bloodhounds once again held a large advantage in points off the bench, outscoring the Beavers 45-15 in that department.

John Jay returns to action on Sat. Feb. 2 at Lehman College at 2 p.m.
