New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women’s basketball team lost a close one on Friday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the City College of New York (CCNY), 50-44, in a conference game at the Doghouse. John Jay now stands at 4-16 (2-8 CUNYAC).

Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY / North Babylon) scored a team-high 14 points in the contest, while Parker Griffin (New York, NY / Bishop Kearney) yanked a team-best 15 rebounds.

The host Bloodhounds trailed most of the contest. After a slow to develop game, CCNY, who led the entire first half, established a 10 point lead at 15-5, more that halfway through the first half.

John Jay got to within six points of the lead on two occasions, most recently at the 3:21 mark of the opening stanza on a Griffin lay-up to cap off a mini 4-0 spurt to make the score 19-13.

But both teams traded baskets the rest of the first half before CCNY went into halftime up 25-15.

CCNY scored the first basket of the second half to go up by 12. But John Jay hung around and went on an 11-2 run to get to within three points of the lead (29-26) with 15:21 to play. Grice scored half of her team-high 14 points during the rally and capped off the spurt with a jumper.

John Jay continued to chip away at the lead and took its first lead of the night when it grabbed a 32-31 lead at the 10:38 mark on a jumper by Ganimete Ukperaj (Bellmore, NY / John F. Kennedy) who scored four points off the bench.

Both teams went back and forth the next several minutes trading leads. But John Jay would grab its biggest lead of the night, a three point advantage (38-35) with 7:35 to go on a lay-up by Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY / St. Barnabas) who had six points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals on the evening.

John Jay still had the lead, and led by two (41-39) with 3:00 to play when the Beavers went on a game changing run to put the game away.

CCNY went on an 8-1 spurt to take a five point lead (47-42) with thirty seconds to go and held on from there.

John Jay outscored CCNY 17-5 in points off the bench and got nine points by reserve guard Maxine Jenkins (Astoria, NY / Bishop Loughlin).

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 30 at Stevens Tech at 5 p.m.
