Hoboken, N.J.— Playing its final non conference road game of the regular season the John Jay women’s basketball team lost as the Bloodhounds fell at Stevens Tech, 82-42, at Stevens Tech’s Canavan Arena on Wednesday.
John Jay got a team-high 14 points from Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY / North Babylon), while Parker Griffin (New York, NY / Bishop Kearney) had eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Maxine Jenkins (Astoria, NY / Bishop Loughlin) had eight points off the bench.
The Bloodhounds fell behind early and the host Ducks led from start to finish.
Stevens Tech scored the first seven points of the game to take a 7-0 lead.
But John Jay raced back with a 6-2 run to get to within three at 9-6 with 12:52 to play capped by a pair of free throws by Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY / St. Barnabas) who chipped in with five points in the contest.
Stevens then used an 8-0 run to go up by double-digits and led 17-6 at the midway point of the first half.
The Bloodhounds did not go away though, and stayed within striking range and were down by six (26-20) with3:36 to play.
But Stevens used an 11-0 run to take its biggest lead of the half, a 17 point advantage (37-20) with 1:40 to play before going into halftime up by 16 at 39-23.
John Jay never got closer to 15 points of the lead in the second half.
The Ducks used a big run early in the second half to go up by over 20. Up 44-29 Stevens Tech used a 20-4 run to grab 64-33 lead with eight minutes remaining to put the game away.
Stevens Tech gradually pulled away in the final minutes en route to a 40 point decision.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Feb. 2 at Lehman College at noon.
