New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay women’s volleyball team fell in three straight at home on Thursday as the Bloodhounds lost to Vassar College, losing by scores of 25-13, 25-12, 25-11. John Jay is now 6-18 on the season, while Vassar is 11-14.
The visiting Brewers led from start to finish in all three sets as John Jay’s two match winning streak ended.
Vassar College scored the first three points of the contest and led 12-3 midway through the opening set behind the servicing of libero Mary-Chris Arena who had one ace during the rally and two in the contest.
John Jay got to within seven points of the lead and trailed 17-10 behind libero Andrea Medina who had a pair of aces during the spurt to go along with a match-high 13 digs.
But Vassar kept the Bloodhounds at arms length distance the rest of the way en route to the first set win.
Vassar scored the first two points of the second set and never trailed in the fray. John Jay got to within one point of the lead twice in the set, most recently at 5-4 on a kill by middle blocker Tatyana Yachnik who had a team-high seven kills.
But Vassar maintained a comfortable lead before increasing its lead at the midway point of the set. Up 13-7 the Brewers rallied off five in a row to take an 18-7 advantage en route to going up 2-0 in the match.
Vassar scored the first three points in the third set, which included a kill by Katie Newton who had a game-high 11 kills to go along with a team-high 10 digs.
John Jay got to within one point of the lead twice in the early stages and trailed 4-3 but the Brewers outscored the Bloodhounds 9-3 to take a 13-6 lead. John Jay rallied off a pair of points to get to within five points of the lead at 13-8.
Vassar then scored seven in a row to make the score 20-8, which included a pair of kills by Julianna Simon who had five kills and two blocking assists, en route to the win.
Vassar had 32 kills in the contest, which included eight from Amy Bavosa and four from Tess Johnson. Katherine Higuera-McCoy added nine digs for John Jay.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Oct. 21 for a home match against Medgar Evers College at 6 p.m.
