Reading, Pa.— The John Jay men's basketball team lost its season opener on Friday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Albright College, 73-62, in the opening round of the Albright College Tip-Off Tournament.
With the loss, John Jay (0-1) will face Montclair State in the consolation game of the tournament on Saturday at 6 p.m. Montclair was defeated by Farmingdale State 70-61 in its opening round game of the tournament.
Albright never trailed in the contest and led by as much as 17 in the first half and they led 38-21 with just over one minute remaining before going into halftime up 38-23.
But the Bloodhounds did not go away, and opened the second half with a 7-0 to pull to within eight (38-30). Godfrey Mascall (Brooklyn, NY, Paul Robeson), who led all scorers with 20 points, connected on back-to-back lay-ups in the opening minutes of the second half to keep John Jay within striking range.
Albright maintained a marginal lead for most of the second half, but John Jay cut into it through the first 10 minutes of the second half. Down 45-34, the Bloodhounds used 13-4 run to pull to within two (49-47) with just over 10 minutes to go. A Mascall jumper capped the rally.
But Albright reclaimed the momentum and went back up by double figures and led 63-52 with 6:27 to go en route to the win.
Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) added 16 points for John Jay, while Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) and Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica) had eight rebounds each.
