Reading, Pa.— The John Jay men's basketball team was defeated by Montclair State, 78-57, on Saturday evening in the consolation game of the Albright College Tip-Off Tournament.
With the loss, John Jay is 0-2 on the season.
The Bloodhounds were paced by three players off the bench who scored in double figures.
Miguel Garcia (New York, NY, St. Raymond's) led John Jay with 13 points. He shot 5-for-9 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from behind the three point line. Fellow teammate
Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) had 10 points on 5-for-9 shooting, while
Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville)netted 10 points as the John Jay bench scored 48 of the team's 57 total points.
John Jay was out rebounded 38-20 and got a team-high eight board from
Daniel Desir, who also contributed with eight points on 3-for-4 shooting.
Montclair State led from start to finish in the contest. The Red Hawks scored the first six points of the game and led by as much as 17 in the first half when they led 27-10 with 6:18 to play.
But the Bloodhounds hung around behind that strong performance by the bench. John Jay narrowed its deficit to six (36-30) on a lay-up by Garcia with 28 seconds remaining before going into halftime down 38-30.
Montclair State though maintained a comfortable lead in the second half. John Jay got back to within six in the first minute, but the Red Hawks, outscoring John Jay 40-27 in the second half, gradually pulled away late to secure the win.
Both teams shot well in the contest, including the first half as both schools connected on 50 percent of their shots. John Jay, who shot 47.8 percent in the contest, connected 52.4 percent in the opening half, while Montclair State swooshed the net on 53.4 percent (15-for-28) in both halves.
Montclair State outscored John Jay 24-7 in points off turnovers and outscored the Bloodhounds 23-12 in second chance points.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Nov. 25 at Kean University at 8 p.m.
