Union, N.J.— The John Jay men's basketball team fell on the road Tuesday evening as the Bloodhounds lost to Kean University, 74-43.
John Jay was paced by
Miguel Garcia (New York, NY, St. Raymond's) with 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting, while
Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) added 10 for John Jay.
Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville)grabbed a game-high seven rebounds for the Bloodhounds who are now 0-3 on the season.
The Bloodhounds went toe-to-toe with Kean in the early stages of the contest and John Jay led by as much as four in the first half, and the Bloodhounds took a 12-8 with 11:52 to play on a pair of free throws by Jaeger, who scored eight points.
But the lead was short lived and the host Cougars went on a 21-5 midway through the first half to take a 29-17 with 4:07 to play. Neither team could put the ball in the ocean after that as the final four plus minutes of play saw Kean outscore John Jay 3-2 the rest of the way to go into halftime up 32-19.
In the second half, Kean opened play with an 8-1 run to take a twenty point lead (40-20) with 17:15 remaining as John Jay could never mount a rally. John Jay got the lead down to 17 and trailed 40-23 early in the second stanza on a continuation three point play by Mason. But Kean gradually increased its lead in the second half and led by 20 or more for a majority of the half.
John Jay trailed by 18 (44-26) on another continuation three by Mason, but Kean went on an 8-2 run to go up 52-28 as the Cougars went on for the win.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Dec. 2 for its 2008-09 home and conference opener (homecoming) against Hunter College at 7 p.m.
