Women’s Basketball Falls to Rutgers-Newark

New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay women's basketball team lost a non conference affair at on Wednesday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Rutgers-Newark University, 56-37, at the Doghouse.

With the loss, John Jay is now 1-7, while Rutgers-Newark is now 3-6.

John Jay was paced by Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) who knocked in a career-high 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting, to go along with a game-high nine rebounds, as John Jay held a 45-35 advantage in rebounding.

The visiting Scarlet Raiders never trailed in the contest, but the Bloodhounds went toe to toe with them through the first 20 minutes.

Rutgers-Newark never led by more than six in the first half and they led by that amount (21-15) with 3:59 to play in the opening stanza on a jumper by Renee Edwards who had eight points off the bench on 4-for-8 shooting.

But John Jay shut down its opponent for over the final four minutes of the first half and closed out the first half on a mini 4-0 run to go into halftime down b two (21-19). Parker Griffin (New York, NY, Bishop Kearney), who recorded nine points in the contest, connected on a jumper with 51 seconds to go to close out the first half.

Rutgers-Newark opened the second half on a 9-1 run to take a double digit lead (30-20) with 17:12 to play, capped on a lay-up by Courtney Vacca, who scored the last seven points of the run as she led the Scarlet Raiders with 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting.

The Bloodhounds followed with a 6-0 run to get back to within four and the Bloodhounds trailed 30-26 with 14:14 to go.

But that was as close as John Jay would get in the contest as Rutgers-Newark extended its lead via a 22-4 run over the next 12 plus minutes to take its biggest lead of the night, a 22 point advantage with 1:54 to play.

John Jay shot 28.6 percent in the contest, while Rutgers-Newark connected on 38.2 percent, including 44.8 in the second half.

Rutgers-Newark held a 25-6 advantage in points off turnovers and outscored the Bloodhounds 20-4 in points off the bench.

John Jay returns to action on Sat. Dec. 13 against Ramapo at 2 p.m.
