Bronx, N.Y.— After closing out the first half with a 10-4 run to establish a nine point cushion at halftime, the John Jay men's basketball team saw Lehman College strike with one sweeping run, a 21-0 spurt to start the second half, as the Bloodhounds fell 62-46 at Lehman College on Thursday evening.
John Jay is now 0-5 (0-2 CUNYAC) on the season.
The Bloodhounds were paced by Gary Brady (Bronx, NY, Martin Luther King) and Godfrey Mascall (Brooklyn, NY, Paul Robeson)with 11 point apiece. Mascall also added five steals and five rebounds in the contest.
Both teams were nip and tuck in the opening stages of the contest. Neither team shot particularly well in what was a low scoring first half for a majority of the opening stanza. Lehman led by as much as four in the first half and led 11-7 with 8:18 to play. But John Jay went on a 22-9 run to close out the first half with its largest lead of the contest (29-20).
But in the second half, the Bloodhounds committed 11 turnovers before scoring their first basket, a Mascall jumper at the 11:32 marker. They were 0-for-3 from the field during that time span and committed a turnover on seven consecutive possessions at one stretch during the spurt.
Mascall's jumper made the score 41-31. But John Jay would get no closer as Lehman maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Lehman then went on an 8-2 run to grab a 49-33 lead (29-4 run total) with 9:27 to go capped by a foul shot by Duane Rhoden, who had 15 points for the Lightning.
The Bloodhounds fell behind by as much as 18 points before the contest ended.
John Jay committed 26 turnovers, including 16 in the second half as Lehman outscored John Jay 27-11 in points off turnovers.
The Bloodhounds return to action on Mon. Dec. 8 at the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7 p.m.
