Women’s Volleyball Falls in Three at Home to Mt. St. Mary’s

New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay women’s volleyball team lost in three straight on Thursday evening as the Bloodhounds fell to Mount Saint Mary’s College by scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 at the Doghouse.
 
John Jay is now 2-9 on the season, while Mt. St. Mary’s is 2-8 overall.
 
The Bloodhounds were paced by Andrea Medina. Playing in her first game since her ankle injury against Western Connecticut State on Sept. 9, Medina had a team high six kills to go along with a tri team high six digs after playing only the final two sets.
 
Tatyana Yachnik contributed four kills, while Zadoora Carson and Justyna Kopec each had a pair of blocking assists.
 
In what was a seesaw battle to start, the visiting Blue Knights took the early advantage and had a 3-0 lead. But the Bloodhounds raced back with five straight points to take a two point lead behind Anjanette Perez who had a pair of service aces during the rally.
 
But the Mount took the lead for good with five rally points to take a 8-5 lead and never trailed again. The Mount were led by Courtney Kenny and Teresa Sorrentino with five kills apiece. Sorrentino also added game highs of six service aces and seven digs in the match.
 
Mount Saint Mary’s led from start to finish in the second set. They scored the first five points of the frame and led by as much as eight on three separate occasions, including the final score.
 
The Bloodhounds went toe to toe with the Blue Knights in the third set and led through the early stages. John Jay took a four point lead and took a 6-2 advantage on a kill by Medina. But the Mount came back to counter before tying the match at 6-6.
 
But John Jay reclaimed the lead and clung to the lead during the middle portion of the contest. After taking a three point lead again, Mount Saint Mary’s tied the match again and the two were knotted at 12-12.
 
The Bloodhounds used another mild rally and went back up by four (17-13) behind the servicing of Kopec, who had a service ace during the rally.
 
John Jay still led by four at 18-14, but the Blue Knights answered with a 3-0 rally to pull to within one.
 
But still down by three (21-18), Mt. St. Mary’s rallied off six straight to lead 24-21 before going on to win.
 
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Sept. 20 for a home tri match with Kean University and the College of New Rochelle, starting at 11 a.m.
