31 Service Aces Leads to Win over Yeshiva in Season Opener

New York, N.Y. --- Erica Lee (New York, NY / Seward Park) and Katherine Higuera McCoy (Jamaica, NY / St. Francis Prep) combined for 14 servic aces in the opening set to set the tone as the John Jay women’s volleyball team, behind 31 total service aces, defeated Yeshiva Univ. in three straight, winning 25-1, 25-8, 25-16 to improve to 1-0 on the season.
 
Lee opened up with four straight service aces to gain the early advantage in the opening set before racing out to a 15-0 lead. She ended the rotation with 11 aces before Higuera-McCoy served three more aces to put the set away.
 
In the second set, the visiting Macabees gained some early momentum and raced out to a 5-1 lead. But John Jay rallied 11 straight points to grab a seven point lead and take control from there. Anjanette Perez (San Jose, Costa Rica / Hackensack), who had four service aces, slammed home three aces during the game changing rally, while Tatyana Yachnik (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan / Lafayette), who had a game-high eight kills (no errors in 10 attempts), slammed home back to back kills to spark it.
 
In the third set the Bloodhounds led wire to wire en route to the victory. Behind a pair of service aces by Crystal Reyes (Bronx, NY / DeWitt Clinton), John Jay scored the first three points of the set before sailing to the season opening win.
 
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Sept. 5 for the Gettysburg Tournament starting with a match against Gettysburg at 3 p.m.
