New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay women’s volleyball team lost in four sets on Tuesday as the Bloodhounds lost to the College of Staten Island (CSI) in a conference match at the Doghouse. John Jay was defeated 16-25, 17-25, 25-23, 20-25.
The Bloodhounds now sit at 3-15 (1-4 CUNYAC) this season, while CSI is now 4-6 (2-3 CUNYAC).
In a match that consisted of nearly 300 attack attempts between the two teams, (149 for CSI and 141 for John Jay) the Bloodhounds had 27 kills while the visiting Dolphins had 41. Each team had 77 digs in the contest.
The Bloodhounds were led in attacks by Tatyana Yachnik with 12 and .135 attack percentage, while Andrea Medina had eight kills and a team-high 27 digs.
CSI’s Caitlin Rogers had 12 kills in the match, to go along with 16 digs, while fellow teammate Vanessa Perez had 11. Alba Basha contributed with a game-high 28 digs.
The visiting Dolphins went wire to wire in the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead on the evening. But the gutsy Bloodhounds rallied off a late run to win the third set. Both sides were nip and tuck for much of the set. And the Bloodhounds took a 10-7 lead after a CSI attacking error. They increased the lead to four and led 14-10 on a kill by Yachnik.
But CSI rallied off six straight points to grab a 16-14 advantage and eventually took a 21-15 lead for an 11-2 total run.
The Bloodhounds came right back in the late stages of the set and tied the set at 21-21 on a CSI attacking error.
CSI took a tenuous lead after that, but the Bloodhounds rallied off two in a row to retake the lead before CSI got one back to knot the set at 23-23.
But a service error, followed by a bad set by the Dolphins sealed the deal for John Jay.
In the fourth set however, in what was a close match at the midway point, the Dolphins pulled away late by outscoring the Bloodhounds 6-0, breaking a 16-16 tie, behind the servicing of Alba who had three straight aces during the rally and five overall.
John Jay returns to action on Thu. Oct. 2 at Ramapo College at 7:30 p.m.
