New York, N.Y. --- Despite out-rebounding their opponent 41-25, the John Jay men's basketball team, forced their opponents into a season-low eight turnovers, while committing 27, as the Bloodhounds suffered their worst home loss of the season and were defeated by Brooklyn College 98-76 at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.
John Jay is now 4-11 (1-4 CUNYAC) this season, while Brooklyn is 11-3 (5-0 CUNYAC) and remain in first place in conference play.
The Bloodhounds were paced by
Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville)and
William Smallwood (Bronx, NY, Cardinal Hayes) with a team co-high 19 points. Jaeger added a career-high 17 rebounds, while Smallwood's 19 points was a career best. Smallwood also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds en route to his first career double-double.
Brooklyn, as a result of limiting themselves to eight turnovers and forcing John Jay into 27, outscored the Bloodhounds 40-4 in points off turnovers.
The Bridges never trailed in the contest and led by as much as 22 points in the first half. Brooklyn took a 40-18 lead at the 7:23 mark, capping off a 19-5 run.
But John Jay trimmed the deficit in the closing minutes of the first half. They used an 11-2 run after falling behind by 22 to pull to within 13 at 42-29. Jaeger scored the first seven John Jay points during the run, while Smallwood closed it out with the final four.
The Bloodhounds cut the deficit to as little as 11 in the final moments of the first half.
Joseph Padell (Staten Island, NY, Tottenville), who had eight points and was 8-for-8 from the free throw line, swished home a pair from the foul line to make the score 44-33 with 2:32 left.
Both teams held sway in the final two minutes as Brooklyn went into halftime up 50-37.
John Jay trimmed away at the lead in the early stages of the second half and got to within six as the Bloodhounds trailed 60-54 with 13:37 to go.
But that was as close as John Jay would get as Brooklyn went on an 8-0 run to go up by 14 (68-54) with 12:00 to go.
John Jay got to within 10 (72-62) with 10:08 to go, but Brooklyn went on a 13-2 run from there to take an 85-64 lead with 6:45 to go to put the game out of reach.
John Jay got to within 16 points late, but not enough.
Brooklyn was led by
Ahmad Hemingway with 25 points, while
Daniel Nisbett had 22.
Richard Jean-Baptiste knocked in 17 for the Bridges.
Brooklyn held a 44-34 advantage on points in the paint and outscored John Jay 22-8 on fast break points.
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Jan. 16 for a home contest against York College at 7 p.m.
