New York, N.Y. --- In a rematch of last season's conference men's basketball championship, York College earned a small amount of revenge after last season's defeat as the Cardinals, behind a 27-0 run in the middle of the first half, broke open a close game and defeated the Bloodhounds, 78-51, at the Doghouse on Friday evening.
John Jay, now 4-12 (1-5 CUNYAC) was led off the bench by
Godfrey Mascall (Brooklyn, NY, Paul Robeson) with 13 points, while
William Smallwood (Bronx, NY, Cardinal Hayes)chipped in with 10. York, now 6-12 (3-3 CUNYAC), was led by
Nick Hamilton-Lopez with 18 off the bench and
Rodney Bennett with 15 points.
York held a 44-16 advantage on points in the paint and outscored John Jay 34-17 in points off turnovers. York, who out-rebounded John Jay 39-28, had a 21-4 advantage in second chance points.
John Jay held a 7-3 advantage early in the contest, but their four point lead proved to be the biggest of the night.
With John Jay holding a 13-11 lead with 13:14 remaining, York ran off 27 points in a row to take a 38-13 lead with 3:59 to go.
The Bloodhounds cut into the lead late in the first half and were within 20 as they trailed 44-24 at halftime, capping off a 9-3 run.
John Jay pulled to within 15 in the second half and were down 48-33 with 16:53 to go capping off a 9-2 run.
But York answered with a 7-0 run to go back up by 22 with a 55-33 lead.
John Jay got to within 17, but no closer. With the Cardinals holding a 55-38 lead, they pulled away with a 14-2 run to grab a 69-40 lead with 8:34 to play.
York's lead was a large as 31 before the final buzzer.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 21 for a home game against the College of Staten Island at 7 p.m.
