New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay men's basketball team out-rebounded their opponent 50-29 in the contest while shooting 62 percent from the floor in the first half en route to taking a 40-18 lead at halftime before claiming a 70-48 win over the College of Staten Island (CSI) at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.
The Bloodhounds, now 5-12 (2-5 CUNYAC) were paced by
Godfrey Mascall (Brooklyn, NY, Paul Robeson)with 22 points off the bench on 7 for 9 shooting, including 7 for 7 in the first half, while teammate
Gary Brady (Bronx, NY, Martin Luther King) knocked in 16 points.
Homer Henriquez (Ridgewood, NY, Grover Cleveland)and
William Smallwood each grabbed 10 rebounds for the Bloodhounds
CSI was led by
Christian Montervino with 18 points, while
Anthony Tisi added 11.
John Jay took control of the game from the outset making six of their first seven shots to take a big lead early.
The Dolphins only lead of the contest was a 3-2 advantage in the opening minute, before the Bloodhounds answered with a 13-1 run to take a 15-4 lead with 15:27 remaining. CSI pulled to within eight on two occasions and with John Jay up 17-9, they used a 9-0 run to take a 26-9 lead with 11:13 to go. Brady, who had 14 points in the first half, connected on a three point field goal to cap the run.
John Jay limited CSI to 20.7 percent shooting in the opening stanza, while out-rebounding the Dolphins 27-7 through the first twenty minutes.
The Bloodhounds never led by less than 17 in the second half en route to the win. CSI pulled to within that much with 5:42 to play capping a 5-0 run as John Jay still led 59-42.
But the Bloodhounds answered back with an 11-4 spurt to go up by 24 and they led 70-46 with 1:33 to play to preserve the win.
John Jay outscored CSI 28-18 in points in the paint and held a 41-7 advantage over the Dolphins in bench scoring.
Mascall chimed in with seven rebounds for John Jay.
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Jan. 23 for a home contest against New York City Tech at 7 p.m.
