Men’s Basketball Powers Past New York City Tech

New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay men's basketball team picked up its second straight win on Friday evening as the Bloodhounds defeated New York City College of Technology (NYCCT), 71-61, in a game played at Doghouse.

John Jay is now 6-12 (3-5 CUNYAC) this season, while NYCCT is 10-7 (6-2).

The Bloodhounds were led by Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) with 21 points and 18 rebounds, while Miguel Garcia (New York, NY, St. Raymond's) knocked in 13 off the bench. The Yellow Jackets were led by Jamaal Hall with 20 points.

The deep Bloodhounds outscored NYCCT 31-6 in points off the bench and John Jay went to the foul line 27 times to NYCCT's 11. And the Bloodhounds shot 16 for 27 from the free throw line, while the Yellow Jackets were 4 for 11.

Both teams went back and fourth in the first half. The half saw four lead changes and two ties. Neither team led by more than five in the first half, and John Jay led at halftime 28-26.

Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica), who chipped in with six points and six rebounds off the bench, broke a 26-26 tie with a layup in the final minute of the first half to give the Bloodhounds the two point advantage.

Desir's layup at the end of the first half proved to give John Jay the lead for good. NYCCT pulled to within two in the opening minute of the second half and trailed 30-28, but the Bloodhounds answered with a 13-6 spurt to take a nine point lead and John Jay was ahead 43-34 with 14:03 remaining.

But NYCCT hung tough and pulled back to within three and they trailed 45-42 with 10:25 to go. A layup by Hall, who had 14 second half points, bought the Yellow Jackets back to within three.

The Bloodhounds however held sway for the rest of the contest keeping NYCCT within arms length distance. John Jay led by as much as eight through the middle stages of the second half, but never put the Yellow Jackets away until the final minutes.

John Jay led 56-48 with 7:29 remaining, but NYCCT responded with a 6-1 spurt to get back to within three and the score was 57-54 with 4:57 left.

But John Jay pulled away late with an 8-2 run that game them a 65-56 lead with 1:29 left.

The Bloodhounds led by as much as 12 in the final minute before scoring a 10 point win.

John Jay returns to action on Mon. Jan. 26 for a non conference games against New Jersey City Univ. at 7 p.m.
