New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay women's basketball team, behind a dominating team effort, snapped a 14 game losing streak to earn their first home and conference win of the season as the Bloodhounds rolled past New York City College of Technology (NYCCT) 67-29 at the Doghouse on Friday evening.
John Jay outscored their guests 29-3 in points off turnovers, 44-8 on points in the paint and 18-0 on fastbreak points en route to the victory.
John Jay, now 2-15 (1-7 CUNYAC) was paced by
Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) with 20 points, while
Parker Griffin (New York, NY, Bishop Kearney)added 18 points and 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season and her third in as many games. Teammate
Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) chimed in with 10, while
Tina Ogunleye (Islandia, NY, Central Islip) grabbed 10 rebounds as the Bloodhounds held a 50-44 rebounding edge.
NYCCT, now 0-17 (0-7 CUNYAC) was led by
Akela Moses with nine points to go along with nine rebounds, while
Kimberly Battle grabbed 13 rebounds and had eight points.
With the visiting Yellow Jackets up 7-6 with 15:32 to play, the Bloodhounds used a 10-0 run to take a 16-7 lead with nine minutes to play.
NYCCT pulled to within six moments later and trailed 16-10 with 8:02 to go, but John Jay outscored the Yellow Jackets 10-2 over the final eight minutes to go into halftime up 26-12.
The Bloodhounds picked up where they left off in the first half, opening the second half with an 8-1 run to take a 34-13 lead with 17:27 to go capped by a Grice fastbreak lay-up.
The Yellow Jackets pulled to within 19 on their next possession, but never closer. The Bloodhounds gradually pulled away and led by as much as 41 in the final minute before claiming the 38 point win.
John Jay shot 45.7 percent from the field in the second half, while NYCCT was limited to 18.8 percent for the game.
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Jan. 26 for a home contest against New Jersey City Univ. at 5 p.m.
