Women's Basketball Falls by Three to Albany-Pharmacy in Consolation Game

Williamsport, Pa.— The John Jay women's basketball team lost a close one on Saturday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Albany-Pharmacy College, 56-53, in the consolation game of the Lycoming College Holiday Classic.

John Jay is now 1-10 on the season.

The Bloodhounds once again got a big performance out of junior forward Parker Griffin (New York, NY, Bishop Kearney) who had game-highs 22 points and 14 rebounds en route to being named to the All-Tournament team. Fellow teammate Tina Ogunleye (Islandia, NY, Central Islip) (Islandia, NY, Central Islip) added 11 points and nine rebounds in the game, while Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) tallied 14 points, six rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

For the second day in a row the Bloodhounds held a noticeable edge in the rebounding category as they outrebounded the opponent 54-36.

John Jay took an early advantage in the contest and led by as much as six in the early stages. They were ahead 12-6 at the 13:27 marker on a Griffin jumper. But Albany-Pharmacy went on a 8-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to grab a 14-12 lead with 10:41 remaining.

Both teams went back and fourth the remainder of the first half with the first twenty minutes of action seeing four lead changes and five ties. But John Jay wrestled away the lead during the latter stages of the half and would lead by as much as five, and the Bloodhounds led 22-17 with 5:34 remaining to cap off a 6-1 run. Ogunleye knocked down a pair of foul shots to put the Bloodhounds up by that amount.

But Albany-Pharmacy closed out the first half on an 8-2 run to reestablish the lead and go into halftime with a one point lead at 25-24.

John Jay took control of the contest in the opening minutes of the second half outscoring the opponent 7-2 in the first four and a half minutes to take a 31-27 lead.

Albany-Pharmacy retook the lead with just over twelve minutes to go and led 38-37 with 12:03 to play.

Both schools went back and fourth for the next several minutes of the contest. But Albany-Pharmacy went on a run that established themselves a nice lead. With John Jay on top 42-40 with 9:35 to play, Albany-Pharmacy went on an 11-2 run to take a seven point lead (51-45) with 5:21 left.

But John Jay never went away and came back to tie the contest at 53 with 1:31 to go on a pair of foul shots by Grice.

But the Bloodhounds would not score again as Albany-Pharmacy went 3-for-4 from the free throw line in the final 90 seconds and John Jay missed the front end of a one and one and went 0-for-2 from the floor. Grice attempted a game tying three pointer as time expired that did not connect.

Albany-Pharmacy, now 8-4 on the season, was led by Amber Batzold with 20 points. John Jay was outscored 20-12 in points off turnovers and Albany-Pharmacy held an 8-0 advantage in bench scoring.

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 7 for a home contest against CCNY at 5 p.m.
