Men's Basketball Loses Close One to Immaculata in Consolation Game

Center Valley, Pa.— The John Jay men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker on Sunday as they fell to Immaculata Univ. 64-62, in the consolation game of the Casa Mia Tournament at DeSales Univ.

With the loss John Jay is now 3-9 overall.

The Bloodhounds were led by Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville)with game-highs 19 points and 14 rebounds en route to being named to the All-Tournament team. Fellow teammate Miguel Garcia (New York, NY, St. Raymond's)chipped in with 17 points for the Bloodhounds.

John Jay trailed 34-27 at halftime after a tight first half that saw four ties and eight lead changes through the first twenty minutes.

But the Mighty Macs went on an 12-0 run late in the first half to turn a 25-22 deficit into a 34-25 lead before going into halftime up 34-27.

Immaculata had the lead for most of the second half and led by as much as 11 (40-29) early on. The Bloodhounds chipped away at the lead for much of the middle stages of the second half to stay within striking range.

John Jay grabbed its first lead of the stanza at the 3:49 mark on a jumper by Jaeger to make the score 59-58. But it was the only lead the Bloodhounds would have and it lasted just 21 seconds as the Mighty Macs came back to counter on a field goal with 3:28 to play to go up by one.

Immaculata went up by three with just over two minutes to go on another field goal before the Bloodhounds came back to tie the contest on a Gary Brady (Bronx, NY, Martin Luther King) continuation three point play with 1:25 to play.

The play tied the score at 62, but John Jay would be held scoreless the rest of the contest. The Might Macs went 1-for-2 on a pair of trips to the foul line in the closing minute and it proved to be enough. John Jay, who shot 42.9 percent (24-for-56) from the floor, missed its final three shots of the contest. Jaeger put up a pair of hotly contested lay ups in the closing seconds that missed as Immaculata came away with the win.

The Mighty Macs were led by Kyle Finklea with 16 points and Immaculata held a 38-20 advantage on points in the paint.

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 7 for a home contest aganst CCNY at 7 p.m.
