Men's Basketball Earns First Conference Win of Season; Defeats CCNY 65-53

New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay men's basketball team used a 19-3 run midway through the second half to turn an eight point deficit into an eight point lead and the Bloodhounds cruised to victory on Wednesday evening as they defeated the City College of New York (CCNY), 65-53, to earn their first win in 2009 and first conference win of the season.

The win improves John Jay to 4-9 (1-2 CUNYAC) this season, while CCNY is now 0-13 (0-3 CUNYAC).

John Jay trailed by seven at halftime and were down 32-25. The visiting Beavers increased their lead early in the second stanza and led by as much as eight on two occasions.

But the Bloodhounds used one sweeping run to take the lead and control of the contest. CCNY took a 37-29 lead at the 18:16 mark of the second half, before John Jay countered. Miguel Garcia (New York, NY, St. Raymond's), who recorded 20 points and nine rebounds, started the run by knocking down a three point field goal to pull the Bloodhounds to within five.

Ryan Olsen (Huntington, NY, St. John the Baptist), who had a game-high five assists to go along with six points and five rebounds, went 3-for-4 from the free throw line and assisted on a jumper over the next three possessions to help John Jay pull to within one (38-37) with 15:11 remaining.

CCNY went back up by three (40-37) before Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville), who led the way with game-highs 23 points and 10 rebounds, made 1-of-2 from the line. William Smallwood (Bronx, NY, Cardinal Hayes), who had four points and six rebounds, connected on a pair from the foul line to tie the game. Then Jaeger, who was 11-for-17 from the free throw line, connected on 1-of-2 again to give John Jay the lead for good.

John Jay scored eight straight after taking the initial lead and led 48-40 with 8:10 to play on a Garcia lay-up.

CCNY stayed in the contest for the next several minutes and pulled to with three and was down 53-50 with 2:49 to play, capping a 7-2 run.

But John Jay used a 5-0 spurt to go back up by eight. A Jaeger continuation thee pointer put the Bloodhounds up 58-50 with 1:45 to play and the Bloodhounds cruised to victory from there.

CCNY was led by Franklyn Dunn with 15 points and eight rebounds.

John Jay outscored the Beavers 40-21 in the second half.
