New York, N.Y.— Playing in its last road contest in the month of January, the John Jay women's basketball team was defeated by Baruch College, 74-41 in head coach
Diane Ramirez's return to her Alma Mater, at Baruch's ARC Arena.
John Jay, now 1-12 (0-4 CUNYAC) this season, was led by
Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) with a game-high 17 points and four steals.
Tina Ogunleye (Islandia, NY, Central Islip) added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Bloodhounds.
The Bloodhounds' only lead of the night was a 1-0 advantage before the start of the game as the host Bearcats were charged with an administrative technical before the start of the contest.
But once the clock started to move, Baruch opened play with a 7-0 run to go up by six and the Bearcats never trailed in the contest.
The Bloodhounds countered with a 7-2 run to pull within one (9-8) at the 17:04 mark of the fast paced first half on a breakaway lay-up by Grice.
But Baruch pulled away gradually through the middle stages of the first half and led by as much as 21 late in the stanza before going into halftime with a 20 point lead of 42-22.
Baruch opened play in the second half on a 10-1 run to go up 52-23 with 16:19 to play and the Bearcats maintained a comfortable lead from there.
Down 56-27 with 13:38 to play, the Bloodhounds went on a 10-2 run to get the deficit down to 21 at 58-37 with 9:34 to play on another Grice lay-up.
But that was as close as John Jay would get as Baruch increased its lead to as much as 35 late in the contest before the final buzzer.
Baruch held a 38-8 advantage on points in the paint and outscored John Jay 22-5 in points off turnovers, 15-7 on second chance points and 20-4 on fast break points.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 14 for a home game, the first of an eight game homestand, against Brooklyn College at 5 p.m.
