New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's volleyball team is undefeated in October! The Bloodhounds opened the new month with their first home win of the season as John Jay defeated the College of St. Elizabeth (CSE) 3-1 at the Doghouse on Thursday evening. John Jay won by scores of 25-14, 26-28, 25-17, 25-17 to improve to 3-12 on the season.
John Jay was led by
Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY, Brentwood) with a game-high 12 kills and a team-high 13 digs, while
Justyna Kopec (Nowa Deba, Poland, Franklin D. Roosevelt) added eight kills. Fellow teammates
Rosmery Martinez (Santo Domingo, DR, James Madison) and
Siobhan West (Manhasset, NY, Benjamin Cardozo) contributed five kills in the win.
Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy)registered three solo blocks and four block assists.
John Jay took the match right to the visiting Screaming Eagles from the opening serve. The Bloodhounds never trailed in the set and took a 10-2 lead early on. John Jay led by as much as 13 and led 23-10 late before coming out with the nine point decision.
Both teams went nip and tuck in the second set. Set number two saw nine ties and four lead changes. CSE led most of the way and led 15-10 midway though. But John Jay scored eight of the next 10 points to pull to take an 18-17 lead behind the servicing of Medina who capped off the rally with an ace.
The Bloodhounds appeared in control and built a 21-18 lead on a kill by Medina. But CSE, off a time out, scored three straight points to tie the score. John Jay went back up by a pair and later led 24-22 but failed to close out the set after a service error gave the Screaming Eagles new life.
Both teams went back and forth before CSE prevailed 28-26.
In the third set, it appeared all CSE in the early stages. Taking the momentum from their game two win, the Screaming Eagles led 13-3 early on. But the Bloodhounds went on a ferocious 11-point rally and took the lead.
Katherine Higuera-McCoy (Jamaica, NY, St. Francis Prep) drilled three service aces during the rally as John Jay took all the momentum away.
The Bloodhounds did not stop and proceeded to lead the rest of the way. CSE tied the set at 15-15, but the Bloodhounds scored the next three points to go up 18-15 with help from a pair of attacking errors by CSE.
Then with John Jay leading by two at 18-16, the Bloodhounds rallied off six more to go up 24-16 behind the servicing of
Crystal Reyes (Bronx, NY, DeWitt-Clinton) who capped off the rally with an ace. An attacking error by the Screaming Eagles sealed the match for John Jay as the Bloodhounds took a 2-1 set lead.
Both teams went back and forth in the early stages of the third set as the match saw nine ties through the first 10 points by either team. The set was tied at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10. But the Bloodhounds put together a four point rally to take the lead.
Renauta Sailsman (Spanishtown, Jamaica, HS For Health Professions) capped off the rally with an ace.
But CSE battled right back and tied it at 14-14 before the Bloodhounds used a three point rally to take the lead and roll to victory from there. Up 19-17, John Jay scored the final six points to ensure the Bloodhounds' first home win of the season.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Oct. 3 for a home tri match. The Bloodhounds will face Polytechnic University at 11 a.m. before battling with Ramapo College at 3 p.m.
