New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's volleyball team closed out its conference and home schedule on Tuesday evening with a three set loss as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Lehman College. John Jay lost 25-20, 25-18, 28-26 to close out the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) schedule with a 4-5 record and sixth place in conference play.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY, Brentwood) with nine kills, 11 digs and four service aces, while
Rosmery Martinez (Santo Domingo, DR, James Madison)had four kills.
Katherine Higuera-McCoy (Jamaica, NY, St. Francis Prep) added 11 digs and three service aces for the Bloodhounds.
The Bloodhounds, playing in front of a very spirited crowd, got first run on the visiting Lightning. Already leading 2-1, John Jay rallied off five in a row to lead 7-1 capped off by the third of three straight service aces by Medina.
But Lehman hung around and with John Jay leading 11-5, Lehman rallied off six straight to tie the set.
John Jay pulled away several times and led by as much three after that. But with the Bloodhounds leading 20-19, the Lightning scored the last six points to win the set.
The Bloodhounds scored the first point of the second set, but it was the only lead John Jay would hold as Lehman led the rest of the way.
John Jay then went toe to toe in the third set with Lehman. The Bloodhounds led early and were up by as much as four. John Jay led 6-2 and 9-5.
But Lehman rallied right back and tied the contest at 9-9 for what was the first tie of the third set. But the set would be tied 13 times to the end including 9-9, 11-11, 12-12, 13-13, 16-16, 17-17, 18-18, 19-19, 21-21, 22-22, 23-23, 24-24, 25-25 and 26-26. But a Lehman kill, followed by a John Jay attacking error sealed the deal for Lehman who improved to 11-16 overall and 6-3 in CUNYAC play.
Lehman was led by
Gerri-Ann Martin with 19 kills and 11 digs, while
Jennifer Winkler had seven kills and six digs.
John Jay returns to action on Thu. Oct. 29 for its 2009 regular season finale at New Jersey City University at 7 p.m.
