vs. Ramapo
New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's volleyball team lost a pair of matches at home on Saturday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated in three straight to Polytechnic University before falling to Ramapo College. John Jay lost 25-4, 25-18, 25-12 to Polytechnic before falling 25-13, 25-17, 25-16 to Ramapo. John Jay is now 3-14 on the season.
In the match against Polytechnic, the Bloodhounds were led by Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY, Brentwood) with five kills and 11 digs, while Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy) and Justyna Kopec (Nowa Deba, Poland, Franklin D. Roosevelt) had three kills each. Kopec also added seven digs in the match.
In the first set, Polytechnic scored the first four points of the contest to take a lead it would not relinquish. After John Jay got its first point of the contest, the Fighting Blue Jays scored the next 12 points to take a 15-1 lead.
John Jay took its first lead of the day when the Bloodhounds led 1-0 in the second set on a kill by Kopec. But Polytechnic scored the next four points to lead 4-1 en route to the set two win.
In the third set, the Bloodhounds battled early on and led 5-4 off another Kopec kill. But Polytechnic took the lead again, and with the Fighting Blue Jays up 9-7, they scored the next six points and led 15-7 before finishing off the match.
Polytechnic was led by Corey Loupee with 10 kills, while Meredith Shipman had eight.
Against Ramapo, Kopec had eight kills and seven digs, while Medina added six kills and eight digs.
In the opening set, Ramapo never trailed and the Roadrunners raced to a 15-6 lead midway though the set.
In the second set, John Jay scored the first point of the match before Ramapo rallied off the next six to lead 6-1 early on. But John Jay did not go away and stayed within striking range. The Bloodhounds tied the contest at 14-14 off a Ramapo attacking error. But the Roadrunners scored six more and led 20-14 late en route to the win.
Both teams exchanged points to start the third set and the match was tied 4-4. Ramapo then put together a three point rally to lead 7-4.
The Bloodhounds pulled back to within one at 7-6, but never got closer as the Roadrunners went on a 10-2 rally to take a 17-9 lead and secure the win.
Ramapo was led by Kaitlin Smith with 12 kills, while Haily Jester had seven. Tiffany Fischer had 33 assists.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Oct. 6 at Mount Saint Mary's at 7 p.m.
