New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's volleyball team was defeated at home to William Paterson University on Thursday losing by scores of 25-10, 25-9, 25-16. John Jay is now 3-16 on the season.
In the contest, John Jay was led by
Justyna Kopec (Nowa Deba, Poland, Franklin D. Roosevelt) with five kills and four digs, while
Jessica Davies (Brawley, CA, Indio) and
Siobhan West (Manhasset, NY, Benjamin Cardozo)had two kills each. West also added five digs, along with
Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY, Brentwood).
Katherine Higuera-McCoy (Jamaica, NY, St. Francis Prep)had a game co-high nine digs.
In the opening set, the Bloodhounds and William Paterson went toe-to-toe. The match was tied 6-6 lead before the visiting Pioneers rallied off eight in a row to take a 14-6 lead. Then with William Paterson up 14-10, the Pioneers scored the final 11 points to win the match.
In the second set William Paterson rallied off two in a row to break a 2-2 tie and the Pioneers never trailed after that.
Up 8-5, William Paterson rallied off nine in a row to take a 17-5 lead en route to taking a 2-0 set lead.
In the third set, John Jay stayed within striking range much of the way. But William Paterson led from start to finish. The Bloodhounds were within one point of the lead on several occasions early on, most recently as 9-8 after a William Paterson service error.
But William Paterson gradually pulled away late to secure the win. Up 13-10, the Pioneers scored three in a row to go up 16-10. John Jay got back to within four three and trailed 17-14 on a block assist by Kopec and
Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy), but no closer. The Pioneers scored the next three points and were up 20-14 before winning 25-16.
William Paterson was led by
Kelly Helfrich with 12 kills, nine service aces and eight digs, while
Amanda Mitchell had nine digs and four service aces.
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Oct. 12 for the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) multi-match at Hunter College starting with a match against York College at 9 a.m. followed by a match with Brooklyn College at 11 a.m.
