New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's volleyball team has earned the No. 6 seed for the 2009 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) tournament as the Bloodhounds are set to go headlong into the conference tournament which starts with a quarterfinal round match this Tuesday.
John Jay will face Hunter College, the No. 3 seed of the eight team tournament at Hunter starting at 6 p.m. If the Bloodhounds with that contest, they advance to the semifinal round and will face the winner between No. 2 the City College of New York and No. 7 York College on Friday at 5 p.m. And with a John Jay win in that match, the Bloodhounds will play again later in the evening for the championship at 8 p.m.
“We have a healthy respect for our opponents, they will be some tough teams we will have to face in this tournament,” said head coach
Micah Acoba. “But we are looking forward to the challenge.”
During regular season play, the Bloodhounds finished 8-22 overall, including 4-5 in CUNYAC. John Jay picked up key wins against CUNYAC opponents York College, Brooklyn College, New York City Tech and Medgar Evers College to earn the No. 6 seed for the tournament. The Bloodhounds also defeated outside opponents Farmingdale State, the College of St. Elizabeth and Yeshiva University as well as Brooklyn College in a neutral site tournament this season.
Through 30 regular season games, John Jay has been led in kills by
Justyna Kopec (Nowa Deba, Poland, Franklin D. Roosevelt) with 182, followed by
Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY, Brentwood) with 150. Kopec and Medina also share the team lead in service aces with 42. And with 232, Medina is John Jay's leader in digs, while
Katherine Higuera-McCoy (Jamaica, NY, St. Francis Prep)is second with 164.
