Men's Basketball Falls to Manhattanville in 2009-10 Season Opener

Purchase, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team was defeated in its 2009-10 season opener on Friday as the Bloodhounds lost to Manhatanville College 74-49 in the opening round of the Castle Classic tip-off tournament hosted by Manhattanville College.

John Jay, 0-1 overall, was led by Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica)with game-highs 16 points and nine rebounds, while fellow teammate Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) recorded 12 points and eight rebounds for the Bloodhounds.

The host Valiants led from start to finish. Manhattanville scored the first five points of the contest and led by as much as 35 points in the first half before going into halftime leading 53-19.

John Jay opened the second half on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 27 with 18:42 remaining and the Bloodhounds were down 53-26 capped on a three point field goal by Ryan Olsen (Huntington, NY, St. John the Baptist)who had eight points in the contest.

The Bloodhounds continued to chip away and down 57-29 went on a 6-0 run, (completing a 16-4 total run to start the second half) to pull to within 22 and John Jay was down 57-35 with 15:15 to go after a Jaeger jumper capped the run.

But John Jay never got closer as Manhattanville went on a 12-2 run to go back up by over 30 and the Valiants led 69-37 with 9:15 to play.

Manhattanville kept the Bloodhounds at arms-length distance the rest of the way before the final buzzer.

Trevoy Pointer led Manhattanville with 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting as the Valiants shot 53.6 percent (30-for-56) from the floor in the game.

John Jay shot 39.1 percent from the floor (18-for-46) in the contest, including 44.1 percent (11-for-25) in the second half.

John Jay held a 27-25 advantage in rebounding.

John Jay will face Connecticut College (who lost 73-60 in their opening round contest) in the consolation game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
