Purchase, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team fell to 0-2 on the season on Saturday as the Bloodhounds fell to Connecticut College 68-63 in the consolation game of the Castle Classic tip-off tournament at Manhattanville College.
David Williams (Jamaica, NY, Martin Luther King) led the Bloodhounds with a career-high 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting, while teammate Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville), who was named to the all-tournament team, added 14 points and 11 rebounds to give the Bloodhounds their first double-double of the season. Freshman Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream) came off the bench and contributed 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting.
Both teams, who will meet once again on Dec. 5 at the Doghouse, went neck and neck through the early stages of the first half. The game saw eight lead changes and four ties through the first 16 minutes and neither team had led by more than three with four minutes remaining in the first half.
But Connecticut College, down 21-19 with 4:09 to play, used an 8-0 run to take a 27-21 lead with 2:54 to play.
The Camels continued to increase their lead and closed out the first half on a 5-0 spurt to turn a seven point lead into a 12-point advantage, their biggest lead of the half as Connecticut College led 38-26 at halftime.
Connecticut College maintained a comfortable lead through the first six plus minutes of the second half and were still up double-digits with a 45-35 lead with 14:48 remaining.
But John Jay quickly got back into it. They went on a 9-0 run to pull to within one with 12:12 to play on a put-back by Eddie Sanford (Alexandria, LA, Bossier) who had four points and five rebounds.
Moments later John Jay took the lead on a pair of free throws by Jaeger with 10:23 left.
But the Camels countered with an 8-3 run to go up by four and Connecticut College led 55-51 with 8:26 left.
The Bloodhounds responded with a 6-0 run to retake the lead and the Bloodhounds took a 57-55 advantage with 6:07 to go on a Jaeger jumper.
Connecticut College responded with an 8-0 spurt after that and took a lead it would not relinquish. The Camels led 63-57 with 3:27 to play and John Jay never had the lead again.
The Bloodhounds got back to within two on two occasions, and were within a deuce as late as with 1:17 left on a pair of free throws by Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica) who had seven points.
Connecticut College made three of four from the line and John Jay was 0-for-2 from the floor in the final minute as the Camels held on for the win.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Nov. 24 for its 2009-10 home opener against Kean University at 7 p.m.
