New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team was defeated by Kean University 66-53 on Tuesday in the Bloodhounds 2009-10 home opener.
The Bloodhounds (0-3 overall) were led by
Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) and
David Williams (Jamaica, NY, Martin Luther King) with a team co-high 11 points, while Jaeger grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for John Jay, who were playing without two senior starters who are out with injuries.
Kean University (1-1 overall) opened the contest by scoring the first 10 points of the game and led 10-0 with just under five minutes gone by.
The visiting Cougars led most of the way in the first half. But John Jay hung around and eventually took a lead later in the half.
With Kean leading 14-8, the Bloodhounds used a 12-2 run to take a 20-16 lead with 5:36 to go. Freshman guard
Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream) gave the Bloodhounds a 17-16 advantage with 6:44 to play on a three-point field goal. Then moments later Williams, knocked down a trifecta at the 5:36 mark of the half to give John Jay its biggest lead of the night.
Kean eventually reclaimed the lead with three straight baskets capped by a monstrous dunk by
Jonathan Jones who had a game and team co-high 15 points for the Cougars.
Kean eventually closed out the half outscoring John Jay 15-2 after Williams' triple and the Cougars led 31-22 at halftime.
Kean opened the second half on a 10-2 run to complete a 25-4 spurt to give the Cougars a 17-point lead, 41-24, with 16:07 to play.
The visitors kept up the pressure and led by as much as 18 moments later and had a 50-32 advantage with just under 10 minutes to go.
But John Jay did not go away and the Bloodhounds countered with a 11-1 run that pulled them to within eight at 51-43 with 5:25 left. Jaeger scored seven of his 11 points during that stretch and
Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica), who had seven points on the night, connected on a lay-up to cap the run.
But Kean answered immediately after and countered with a 9-0 spurt to go up by 17.
The Bloodhounds got the lead down to as little as 11 and they trailed 60-49 after a
Joseph Padell (Staten Island, NY, Tottenville)three pointer with 1:46 left. But John Jay got no closer as Kean closed out the game connecting on 4-of-7 from the foul line to preserve the win.
Kean was paced by Jones and
Akinwande Oshodi with 15 points each, while
Mike Shaughnessy had 10 assists for the Cougars.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Dec. 1 at conference foe Hunter College at 7 p.m.
