New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's volleyball team was defeated by Hunter College 3-0 in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 City University of New York Athletic Conference women's volleyball tournament at the Hunter College Sportsplex. The Bloodhounds lost 25-20, 25-9, 25-21 to end the season at 8-23 overall.
John Jay, the No. 6 seed in the eight team tournament, was led by senior
Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY, Brentwood)with nine kills and a team co-high 15 digs. Meanwhile
Justyna Kopec (Nowa Deba, Poland, Franklin D. Roosevelt) added six kills, 12 digs and a team-high three service aces.
Erica Lee (New York, NY, Seward Park) also registered 15 kills, while
Katherine Higuera-McCoy (Jamaica, NY, St. Francis Prep) had 11 digs in the contest.
In the opening set, the Bloodhounds went with the No. 3 seed Hunter Hawks for most of the game. The first set saw 10 ties and four lead changes. The Bloodhounds fell behind by as much as four points early on and trailed 11-7 midway through the opening set before outscoring Hunter 8-3 to take a 15-14 lead capped by a kill by Medina.
But the lead was short lived as Hunter rallied back and took a 16-15 lead and never trailed again. John Jay tied the score at 16-16, but Hunter rallied off four of five points to take a 20-17 lead before going on for the win.
In the second set, John Jay led early and was up 3-1 capped by a service ace by Kopec before the Hawks scored six straight to take a 7-3 lead.
John Jay got to within three points of the lead and trailed 7-4, but that was as close as the Bloodhounds would get in the contest. Up 13-7, Hunter rallied off nine in a row to take a 22-7 lead before going on to the win.
In the third set, John Jay led 1-0, but that was the only lead the Bloodhounds would hold as Hunter scored the next two points to take a 2-1 lead. John Jay tied the score twice (2-2 and 3-3) but never reclaimed the lead.
The match was relatively close early on, but with Hunter up 12-10, the Hawks rallied off on an 8-3 spurt to lead 20-13.
John Jay pulled to within as little as three when the Bloodhounds trailed 24-21 after rallying off four in a row. But Hunter put the match away on the next service to complete the match.
