Men's Basketball Falls in High Scoring Affair at Hunter

New York, N.Y.— Despite scoring a season-high 87 points, including 55 in the second half, on 64.9 percent shooting, the John Jay men's basketball team was defeated on the road in their 2009-10 City University of New York Athletic Conference opener as the Bloodhounds lost to Hunter College 94-87 at the Hunter College Sportsplex.

John Jay, now 0-4 (0-1 CUNYAC) was paced by Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) with 28 points, playing for the first time this season and the first time since January, and upped his career total to 928.

Mason was one of four players for John Jay to score in double figures as Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) added 19, while David Williams (Jamaica, NY, Martin Luther King) pumped in 15 and Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica) chipped in with 10(on 5-for-5 shooting) and had 12 rebounds for the Bloodhounds who dominated in the paint outscoring Hunter 62-28 on points in the paint.

The host Hawks led most of the way in the first half. John Jay's only lead in the game was 2-0 after Mason got the scoring started with a jumper less than two minutes in.

Hunter, who shot 50.8 percent in the contest, including 51.4 percent in the first half scored the next five points of the contest and took a 5-2 advantage before holding a lead the rest of the way.

The host Hawks led by as much as 16 in the first half and had a 42-26 lead with 2:56 to go after Hunter's Mark Courtien knocked down a three-point field goal to cap off a 12-2 run.

Hunter maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the first half and went into halftime up 46-32.

Hunter maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half. The Hawks led by as much as 20 and Hunter took a 63-43 lead with 14:06 to go on a trifecta by Anthony Uter.

The Hawks still had a comfortable lead and 77-61 with 7:38 to play. But John Jay went on an 8-1 run to cut the deficit to single digits and the Bloodhounds were down 78-69 with 6:00 remaining after Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream), who had four points and three assists, connected on a jumper.

Moments later the Bloodhounds cut into its deficit even further. Down 81-69 with 5:20 to play, John Jay used an 11-2 spurt to narrow its deficit to three and John Jay trailed 83-80 with 2:51 to play. Four players scored for John Jay during the run and Williams, who had five points during the spurt, knocked down a three point field goal to cap it.

But the Bloodhounds could not cut into the lead any further. Hunter outscored John Jay 4-0 over the next minute to go back up by seven and the Hawks led 87-80 with 1:33 left.

Hunter went 5-for-6 from the line in the final minute to preserve the win.

Hunter was led by Eric Klingsberg with 27 points.

John Jay returns to action on Thu. Dec. 3 for a home contest against Lehman at 7 p.m.
