Women's Basketball Falls to Hunter in 2009-10 Conference Opener

New York, N.Y.— Playing in their first City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) contest of the 2009-10 season, the John Jay women's basketball team lost on the road as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Hunter College 83-56 at the Hunter College Sportsplex on Tuesday night.

John Jay, now 0-4 (0-1 CUNYAC), was led by Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon) who tied a career-high with 28 points, while Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) added 17 in the contest.

The Bloodhounds took a lead early in the contest. They opened play on a 7-2 run with six quick points from Grice to start the contest just three minutes in.

The Hawks countered immediately and tied the game just thirty-six seconds later. John Jay led one more time on another Grice field goal. But Hunter went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-7 lead and Hunter never trailed again.

John Jay got to within two points of the lead but the Bloodhounds never led again.

With Hunter up 15-13 with just over 12 minutes to go, the Hawks went on a 9-0 run to go up by double-digits and Hunter maintained its lead the rest of the way.

The host Hawks led by as much as 17 in the first half and were out in front 35-18 with 5:30 remaining.

The Bloodhounds closed out the first half by outscoring Hunter 9-2 over the last 3:22 to get to within eight points of the lead as John Jay trailed 39-31 at halftime.

John Jay came out ferocious in the second half and were within five points of the lead after a lay-up by Lirio with just over five minutes gone by and the Bloodhounds were down 46-41.

But Hunter used a 24-3 run immediately after to go up 70-44 and the Hawks never looked back.

Hunter was led by Megan McKenna with 20 points, while Andrea Buckham and Juanita Whyms had 18 each for the Hawks. Whyms also grabbed a game-high 21 rebounds.

Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy) led the Bloodhounds with nine rebounds to go along with six points.

John Jay is back in action on Thu. Dec. 3 against Lehman College for a home contest at 5 p.m.
