John Jay Basketball Teams Set to Restart for Second Half of Season

New York, N.Y.— After an extended break the past two and a half weeks, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice men's and women's basketball teams are set to continue their 2009-10 schedules this week. The men are traveling to Hampden-Sydney, Virginia to compete in the Car-Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday Hoops Tournament hosted by Hampden-Sydney College on Dec. 29-30, while the women's team will host Simmons College on Dec. 30.

The men's basketball team (1-7), who last played at Rutgers-Newark University on Dec. 12, will face the host school at 5 p.m. in the opening round. The other teams in the tournament, St. Mary's and Averett College, will square off at 7 p.m. The losers from Tuesday's games will meet at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, while the winners will play at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

The men's team has been led this season by senior forward Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith), who is averaging 15.2 points per game. Mason, who was named the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Player of the Week on Dec. 7, enters the tournament with 976 career points, needing just 24 for to become the eighth player in John Jay men's basketball history to score 1,000 in a John Jay uniform. Fellow teammate, Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) is netting 13.3 points per game and grabbing a team-high 8.8 rebounds per contest.

The women's team (0-7) will close out its 2009 calendar year with Wednesday's matinee against Simmons. The Bloodhounds have been led in scoring by Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY, North Babylon)with 15.7 points per game, while Jessica Lirio is second with 13.4 per contest. Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy) is the team's leader in rebounding at 8.5 per game.
