Men's Basketball Falls to Hampden-Sydney in Opening Round of Car-Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday Hoops Tournament

Hampden-Sydney, Va.— The John Jay men's basketball team was defeated by Hampden-Sydney College, 83-56, in the opening round of the Car-Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday Hoops Tournament.

John Jay, now 1-8 on the season, was led by Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) with 13 points, while Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica)chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds. Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) added nine points and eight rebounds, while Ryan Olsen and Isaiah Holman (New York, NY, Manhattan Center)had eight points each.

The host Tigers scored the first 19 points of the game en route to leading from start to finish. Hampden-Sydney led by as much as 30 in the first half and led by 27 at halftime as a buzzer beater three pointer from the top of the key to end the first half put the Tigers up 46-19..

John Jay went the first seven plus minutes before scoring their first basket of the contest. The Bloodhounds shot 26.9 percent (7-for-26) in the first half.

Hampden-Sydney's Turner King scored a game-high 29 in the contest, including 23 in the first half. He drained all six of his three point field goals attempts in the first half and was 6-for-8 from downtown in the game. He shot 11-for-15 from the field in the game.

The Bloodhounds fought back in the second half, going on a 13-2 run to start the stanza to pull to within 16 as John Jay trailed 48-32 with 16:25 remaining.

But the Tigers responded immediately with an 18-0 run of their own to go up 66-32 with 11:57 to play.

Hampden-Sydney led by as much as 36 points in the contest en route to the win.

Mason upped his point total to 991 for his career, needing just nine for 1,000.

John Jay will play at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the consolation game against Averett University who was defeated by St. Mary's, 69-64 in the tournament's other game.
