Hampden Sydney, Va.— The John Jay men's basketball team lost to Averett University 76-57 in the consolation game of the Car-Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday Hoops Tournament hosted by Hampden-Sydney College.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) with a game-high 24 points to go along with nine rebounds. He knocked down a pair of free throws with 17:49 to go in the second half to give him 1,000 for his John Jay career, and he was named to the tournament's All-Tournament Team after averaging 18.5 points over the two day affair.
Despite Averett leading from start to finish, the game was close throughout.
The Cougars opened the game on a 12-4 run the first 4:20 of the contest en route to leading throughout.
The Bloodhounds got the deficit to within a point with 11:59 to play on a jumper by Mason, who had nine points in the first half, as John Jay trailed 16-15.
But Averett spurted another run and scored six unanswered to go back up by seven as the Cougars led 22-15.
John Jay got back to within a field goal with 5:26 to play on a lay-up by
Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica), who had 10 points and 12 rebounds and the Bloodhounds were down 25-23.
But the Cougars closed out the half scoring the last five points and went into halftime up 30-23.
Averett got its first double-digit lead of the game on a three point field goal to start the second half. But the Bloodhounds did not go away and chipped away at the lead and wrestled the margin back to one with 13:20 to play on a lay-up by
Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream), who had 10 points, as John Jay was down 37-36.
John Jay got back to within one point of the lead on four occasions over the next six minutes, but Averett answered the call each time and never relinquished its advantage.
The Bloodhounds were down by a point and trailed 50-49 with 6:44 to play before the Cougars went on a 14-2 run take a 64-51 lead with 4:36 to play.
Averett maintained its double-digit lead and led by as much as 20 before the contest ended.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Cougars and they were led by
Kenny Hart with 15 points.
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Jan. 2 when the play King's College in the opening round of the Wilkes-Barre Challenge.
