New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team lost a non conference home contest on Saturday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Connecticut College 66-58.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) with a team-high 18 points (all in the second half) to go along with nine rebounds. He increased his career point total to 960, now needing 40 to eclipse the 1,000 mark for his career. Fellow teammate
Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) posted his second double-double in as many games with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
In what was a close game throughout which saw 11 ties and six lead changes, neither team led by double-digits in the contest until Connecticut College took a 10-point lead in the final minute.
The visiting Camels, who defeated the Bloodhounds twice this season (11/21 in the consolation game of the Castle Classic Tip-Off Tournament), opened the game by taking a 7-1 lead with just four minutes gone by.
But the Bloodhounds roared right back and went on an 11-0 run to take a 12-7 advantage midway through the first half.
It proved to be John Jay's biggest lead of the stanza as Connecticut College hung around and both teams went back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than five.
With John Jay leading 18-14 with 5:25 to go in the first half, the Camels went on a 9-0 run to retake the lead and were up 23-18 with just over a minute and a half remaining before John Jay scored the final four points of the first half as Connecticut hung to a one-point lead at 23-22 at the break.
The Bloodhounds had the lead for much of the early stages of the second half. They led by as much as four and were up 32-28 with just under fifteen minutes to go.
But the Camels, with the score tied at 48 with just over five minutes to play, went on a 7-0 run to take a 55-48 lead with 3:37 to play. The Bloodhounds got its deficit to within five, but a three point field goal on the other end by Connecticut put the Camels back up by eight.
Then after a turnover by John Jay on the ensuing possession, the Camels made 1-of-2 from the line and were up nine (59-50) with 2:12 to go.
John Jay got the lead back to seven on two occasions on continuation lay-ups by
Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica)and
David Williams (Jamaica, NY, Martin Luther King). But both failed to connect on the bonus leaving John Jay with a seven point deficit in the final two minutes.
The Bloodhounds were within seven once more after a Jaeger lay-up with 51 seconds left to make the score 63-56.
But John Jay went 1-for-5 from the field in the final moments and Connecticut went 3-for-4 from the foul line to preserve the win.
Connecticut was led by Dean Lampe with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Brian Mahoney added 17 for the Camels.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Dec. 9 at William Paterson at 8 p.m.
