Wayne, N.J.— The John Jay men's basketball team suffered its worst loss of the season as the Bloodhounds were defeated by William Paterson University 86-45 in a non conference game on Wednesday.
The host Pioneers opened the game on a 16-0 run and never looked back. The Bloodhounds went scoreless over the first seven plus minutes to start the game, and John Jay did not score their first points of the game until
Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream)knocked down a three point field goal with 12:42 to play.
John Jay did get back into the contest over the next few moments. Trailing 18-3 with 11:51 to go, the Bloodhounds used a 6-0 spurt to pull to within nine and William Paterson led 18-9 with 9:41 to play.
But William Paterson outscored the Bloodhounds 21-5 over the next eight and a half minutes to take their biggest lead of the half as the Pioneers led by 25 (39-14) with 1:17 to go.
William Paterson ended the first half with a 41-17 lead.
The Pioneers opened the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 48-17 advantage.
John Jay pulled to within 28 points of the lead moments later, but William Paterson maintained a 30-plus point lead over the final 18 minutes of the second half en route to the win.
John Jay was led by
Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville) and
Ryan Olsen (Huntington, NY, St. John the Baptist)with 12 points each, while
Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) had a team-high six rebounds. William Paterson was paced by Joseph Ellis with 21 points and nine rebounds.
John Jay returns to action on Sat. Dec. 12 at Rutgers-Newark at 8 p.m.
