New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team wrapped up its 2008-09 regular season with a loss on the road at Hunter College, 70-61, at the Hunter Sportsplex on Friday.
John Jay ends its regular season at 7-18 (4-9 CUNYAC) and will be the No. 7 seed in next week's Con Edison / City University of New York Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament, where they will face No. 2 seed Brooklyn College on Sun. Feb. 22 in Brooklyn at a time to be determined.
On Friday, the Bloodhounds were paced by
Miguel Garcia (New York, NY, St. Raymond's) who had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, while
Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville)knocked in 13 and grabbed six boards.
Hunter never trailed in the contest en route to sweeping the season series from the Bloodhounds.
The host Hawks scored the first eight points of the game to lead 8-0 early on. Hunter maintained a sizable lead for much of the first half.
But John Jay made a run at Hunter later in the stanza. Down 17-9 with 10:53 to go, the Bloodhounds went on a 10-2 run to tie the contest at 19-19.
The Bloodhounds could not get over the hump though, and that was as close to the lead as John Jay would get. Hunter answered with a 6-0 spurt to go up by a half dozen and the Hawks never trailed again.
Hunter maintained a cushion the remainder of the first half and went into halftime up 33-27.
The Hawks then opened the second half with an 8-2 run to take a 41-29 lead with 16:17 to go.
John Jay got back to within seven at 13:27 to make the score 45-38, capping off a 5-0 run, but no closer.
Hunter maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the second half. They led by as much as 14 in the second half before winning by nine.
