The defending City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) men's basketball champion Bloodhounds have earned the No. 7 seed for the 2009 Con Edison CUNYAC men's basketball championship and play at No. 2 seed Brooklyn College in the opening round of the championship tournament on Sunday Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.

If John Jay wins that contest, they will play the winner between No. 3 York College and No. 6 Hunter College on Wed. Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Nat Holman Gymnasium. And if the Bloodhounds pick up a victory there, they will play for the championship on Fri. Feb. 27 at 7:45 p.m. at Nat Holman Gymnasium.

The Bloodhounds enter this season's tournament 7-18 (4-9 CUNYAC), while Brooklyn was 20-5 (11-2 CUNYAC) during the regular season. In their lone regular season matchup this season, the Bridges defeated the Bloodhounds 98-76 at the Doghouse on Jan. 14.

In the regular season, the Bloodhounds were led by Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville)who led the team averaging 12.6 points per game. Fellow teammate Godfrey Mascall (Brooklyn, NY, Paul Robeson)was second on the squad averaging 11.9 points per game. Jaeger also led the team in rebounding with 8.1 per game.

“We have enough guys on the team that remember the magical run of last season,” said John Jay head coach, Charles Jackson. “All it takes is for us to put three solid games together. But we have to do it one game at a time and I hope we are playing our best basketball.”

Last season, John Jay won their first conference championship in school history via the No. 6 seed and defeated the College of Staten Island in the opening round before downing New York City Tech in the semifinals. The Bloodhounds then defeated York College to complete the task.
