Men’s Basketball Loses 2008-09 Home Regular Season Finale to Lehman

New York, N.Y. --- The John Jay men's basketball team, playing in its final home regular season game of the 2008-09 season, was defeated as the Bloodhounds lost to Lehman College, 71-53, at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.

John Jay, now 6-16 (3-7 CUNYAC), was paced by senior Miguel Garcia (New York, NY, St. Raymond's), who was playing in his final career home game at John Jay, with 13 points and nine rebounds. Lehman is now 16-6 (8-2 CUNYAC) and was led by Alen Redzic with 19 points, while Duane Rhoden had 16 and Xavier Garvin had 12.

The Bloodhounds came out smoking and scored the first five points of the contest en route to opening the game on a 10-3 run.

But the lead proved to be short lived as Lehman countered with a 12-2 run to take a 15-13 lead with 12:19 to play.

John Jay answered with a 4-0 run to reclaim a one point lead at 16-15 with 11:14 to play, before the Lightning responded with a 9-2 run to take a six point lead at 24-18 with 8:07 remaining.

The Bloodhounds got back to within two points but never had the lead again as Lehman pulled away again late and led by nine at halftime (39-30).

Lehman gradually pulled away in the second half and John Jay never got to within seven points of the lead in the final twenty minutes.

John Jay was within seven at 43-36 with 13:45 to go on a Garcia lay-up capping a 6-2 run to start the second half. But Lehman answered by trading baskets with the Bloodhounds, before using a 10-2 run to turn a 53-44 advantage into a 63-46 lead with 5:55 remaining.

Lehman maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way en route to victory.

John Jay returns to action on Sat. Feb. 7 at the City College of New York at noon.
