New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team lost a tough one on the road Saturday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the City College of New York (CCNY) in a conference match-up 66-63, at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
John Jay, now 6-17 (3-8 CUNYAC), was led by
Chris Jaeger (Hicksville, NY, Hicksville)who knocked in 17 points off the bench and grabbed six rebounds.
Ryan Olsen (Huntington, NY, St. John the Baptist) chipped in with 10 points for John Jay who would have clinched a playoff spot with a win today.
The host Beavers led most of the contest. CCNY led the entire first half and led by as much as 10 in the opening stanza.
But John Jay hung around, and though never owning a lead in the first half, they pulled to within one and were down by just a point with 3:19 remaining on a lay-up by
Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica) capping a 13-4 run.
But CCNY answered each time and maintained the lead and went into halftime up three at 33-30.
The Bloodhounds opened the second half on a 6-2 run to take their only lead of the game. The Bloodhounds led 36-35 on a Jaeger lay-up with 18:14 remaining.
CCNY though, used a 5-0 run to go back up by four and they never trailed again. The Beavers led by as much as 11 and they were up 53-42 with 13:10 to go, capping a 12-4 run.
But John Jay did not go away and stayed within striking range. Down by nine at 61-52 with 3:46 to go, John Jay went on an 8-0 run to pull to within one at 61-60 with 1:42 to go.
The Beavers however, never gave up the lead as they traded baskets the final one and a half minutes. The Bloodhounds pulled to within one on two occasions, most recently with twenty seconds left on a lay-up by
Gary Brady (Bronx, NY, Martin Luther King). John Jay had a chance to take the lead on their next possession after a CCNY turnover, but a lay-up with 10 seconds left did not connect.
CCNY went to the line and made one of two to go up by a deuce with eight seconds left, but a John Jay turnover gave the ball back to CCNY who made one of two again to go up by three with two seconds to go before the game ended.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Feb. 11 at Medgar Evers at 7:30 p.m.
