Maspeth, N.Y.— The 2009-10 season for the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Department of Athletics got off to a winning start on Tuesday as the men's soccer team opened the 2009-10 athletics calendar with a 2-1 win over SUNY Purchase.
The win for the Bloodhounds (1-0-0) not only got the athletics department off in a wining effort, but it marked a winning debut for the new coaching staff which includes two former players, head coach
Chris Weeks and assistant coach
Kamal Haruna.
“It feels great to start off with a win to start the season and in my coaching debut,” said Weeks. “But it's just one win and we have a long season ahead still.”
The Bloodhounds spotted the visiting Panthers a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, when SUNY Purchase's
Sebastian Munoz found the back of the mesh at the 36:35 mark of the first half.
But John Jay closed out the first half with a pair of goals in the final five minutes to score all it would need to preserve the win.
The Bloodhounds knotted the contest at 1-1 at 41:05 on a goal by
Johan Quinde (Aragua, Venezuela, Samuel Gompers) from point blank range after receiving a pass from
Sergey Bomko (Kiev, Ukraine, John Dewey).
John Jay then took the lead for good moments later on a soft lifted shot by
Steven Castillo (Maspeth, NY, Forest Hills) from about 35 yards out that went over the head of the outstretched Panthers' goalkeeper Alex Frenkel.
Castillo's goal, which came less than a minute before halftime, proved to be the game winner.
John Jay outshot SUNY Purchase 14-11 in the contest.
Chris Adao (Colonia, NJ, Colonia) and
Joseph Rahilly (Malverne, NY, Malverne) combined to make four saves to preserve the win for John Jay. Adao played the first half and made two saves, while Rahilly played the final 45 minutes in net and saved another pair.
“The win feels great. The guys have been working hard all preseason and today it paid off with a win,” said Haruna. “The guys are sticking together, playing as a team and showing discipline.”
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Sept. 4 for the Union College Classic. The Bloodhounds will face Union College at 3:30 p.m.
