Women’s Volleyball Loses Home Opener to SUNY Old Westbury

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay College of Criminal Justice women's volleyball team lost its 2009 home opener on Thursday as the Bloodhounds fell to SUNY Old Westbury 3-0. John Jay lost by scores of 25-19, 25-10, 25-20. They are now 1-2 this season.

The Bloodhounds were led by Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY, Brentwood) and Justyna Kopec (Nowa Deba, Poland, Franklin D. Roosevelt)with four kills each in the contest, while Siobhan West (Manhasset, NY, Benjamin Cardozo)had a match-high 10 digs for the Bloodhounds. Medina also added three service aces for John Jay.

Both teams went toe-to-toe in the opening contest, but the visiting Panthers held the lead for the majority of the first set. With the match tied at 8-8, SUNY Old Westbury rallied off three in a row to take a lead it would not relinquish. Leading 19-18 late in the set, SUNY Old Westbury outscored John Jay 6-1 to close out the match.

In the second set, John Jay led 5-1 and 7-3 early on. But the Panthers scored six in a row to take a 9-7 lead.

After the Bloodhounds narrowed the deficit, SUNY Old Westbury scored 11 in a row to take a 20-8 advantage en route to taking a 2-0 lead.

The third set was close most of the way and had 11 ties. But with the score 16-16, SUNY Old Westbury rallied off six in a row to take a 22-16 lead and go on to win.

John Jay returns to action on Sat. Sept. 12 for the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) multimatch at York College. The Bloodhounds will play the City College of New York at 1 p.m. before facing New York City Tech at 5 p.m.
